Friday Night Fallout

Sorry I'm so late with this post. I've been busy watching my beloved Phillies get swept right out of the NL playoffs.  Nothing like watching your favorite baseball team get back in the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, and then they're out in just about 14 minutes.  Ugh.

On to the football.

  • I'd like to send a big congratulations out to Al Starnes and the Crittenden County Rockets.  This was "Team Turmoil" for the first month of the season as they lost a bunch of key kids for a variety of reasons.   Just two weeks ago they were 0-5 and barely showing a pulse. What a difference a win can make.  The Rockets took apart Webster County at home and then went to Ballard Memorial Friday and looked like a vintage Crittenden team. With games left against Union County and Fulton County, it's not out of the realm of possibilities they can get 4 wins this year.  That game with Fulton County will be big.  The loser will most likely head to Mayfield for the first round of the playoffs.
  • Lone Oak.  Yikes.  I think it was 21-0 at Hopkins Central before anybody had even settled into their seats. And that was supposed to be a tough game for the Flash.  That offense is so good right now, it's scary.
  • Massac County really looked like a paper tiger the first six weeks of the year.  The Patriots and their spread offense really shredded some poor teams early this season.  But when facing ranked teams in Anna-Jonesboro and Herrin, Massac either couldn't score (0 points vs. AJ) or couldn't stop anybody (gave up 55 to Herrin.)  Friday, they put it all together in trouncing 9th-ranked West Frankfort on the road.  Not only does it all but assure the Pats of a playoff spot now, but that win could very well get Massac a first round home playoff game.
  • The last time Martin Westview was 6-0 was 2001. That year the Chargers ended up losing in the state championship game.  They've quietly gone about their business this year, mainly because it seems they play on the road every week.  They'll be home for three of the last four weeks of the season, not to mention any playoff games they get.

I'll be back with our "How We Voted" listing later on Sunday night.

Simply put, more people voted for that game than any other.  We leave it up to you guys, and that's what you gave us this week.

Where was the video from the Marshall/Madisonville game?  With it being an away game a lot of fans don't make the trip and rely on you to show us what happened.  So what happened?

Obviously, the game of the week should have been LO @ Hop Central.  Why can't we give Bidwell and Miller a chance to veto the "ballot stuffers" votes when the masses have chosen poorly. You guys can see the whole picture and not be jaded by passion for the home team.

Jeff, do you have any stats for the Massac County - WF game?

In order of questions.

1.  Jeremy...technology let us down last night.  When we are too far away at games to get the video back to the station in time for the show (for example in Madisonville), we send it back via high-speed internet. Apparently "high-speed" in Madisonville is very, very slow.  So in sending the Lone Oak game and the Marshall County game back, we only got the Lone Oak game back in time, and that barely got on as it was.  The video that we shot should be up on the web soon.  It was just an unfortunate series of events.  Trust me, I'm as frustrated as anybody in Marshall County.

2.  Jacob...For six weeks, the voters picked great games. Last night, they didn't.  There's no sense in us having you guys vote for game of the week, and then just ignoring you guys and picking whatever we want.   What we get is a lot of people viting with their heart and not their head, and that's expected.

As for this week, I think we got the fewest votes of any week we've had. On paper, there just weren't many good games...which turned out to be true judging by all of the blowouts. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Lone Oak's games are rarely even in the top 3 or 4 of top vote-getters every week.  For whatever reason, no one votes for them.

3.  Marty...http://www.thesouthern.com/articles/2007/10/06/sports/21744143.txt.  This story has some stats in it that might help you.

Did you happen to see the performance of Marshall County running back Brandon Walker?  With the absense of hard charger Alan Williams the Marshals found out that they have a potent weapon in Walker on offense and on defense.  ( Not forgetting his two INT's )  Do you think after this performance that Coach Shelton will send the ball his way a little more often?

Calvin,

I would hope so.  I've been very impressed with Brandon's play the past two years.  He's really an unsung hero in that high-powered offense and he is play-maker on defense.  Simple as that, Walker makes plays.  I wouldn't be surprised if Shelton keeps going back to that well a little more often the rest of the way.

With it given that the game of the week is voted on by the viewers, do you two (Bidwell and Miller) have a personal favorite for the upcoming game of the week pick?

Without speaking for Greg, I'd say there are a couple candidates without thinking too hard about it.  I think Calloway at Mayfield has the potential to be a good game if Calloway can avoid getting down early.

Christian County at Trigg will be a good test for Trigg.  We've been voting them #1 for a couple weeks now, but they did struggle with Heath Friday.  Playing a decent 5A team shouid be a good barometer for where the Cats are right now.

As of this moment, I could flip a coin and be perfectly happy with either of those games.  But of course, it's not up to me.

keep in mind all there's four high schools in the county of mccracken which some-what splits the voting for the game of the week - don't think that number (4) plays such a role in other near-by counties - kalloway & mayfield you say bid, you gotta be kidding -  that's an awfully big 'if' there man for potential...

Kent, if I had to pick right now, I'd say Mayfield is easily the favorite to win the game.  BUT, I think Calloway can keep it close early, if they can play some defense.

Mayfield's strength is THEIR defense.  Their offense is good, but not explosive. They only scored 17 against Graves, 16 against Tilghman. Of course they only gave up 6 points in those two games.  If Calloway can hang on to the ball, they can keep the score respectable.  I just don't think the Lakers will be able to score enough points on that Mayfield defense to really threaten the Cardinals.

I agree with Jeff, the Mayfield-Calloway game is intriguing for the reasons stated above....but for me, it's also interesting to see Mayfield playing games this late in the season that will test them.  I know they've played Evansville North in the past and in the late 90's Murray challenged them, but digest this.  The Cards are 34-4 in October the last nine years winning each game by an average of 34 points.  I like the fact they have Calloway, Fulton City, Marshall and Caldwell to close the year.  That should get them playoff tough.

Stepping outside of Kentucky, there are some big games in Illinois this weekend.  Anna-Jonesboro goes to Pinckneyville for the SIRR Mississippi Title, Carterville gets Hamilton Co. to wrap up the Black Diamond and Herrin can wrap up the SIRR Ohio title with a win over West Frankfort.

okay bid, mill, & even kile from kall all make good / reasonable points and taken they are fellows - but hey mill i will will pick 'one' small bone with ya man - the card's first half of the season has already toughened them for play-off stride - now all you guys know they are a 1a school and constantly / traditionally play a very testy schedule usually game after game year after year other than whom they 'must' face classification wise - they will cut through 3 of those last 4 teams mentioned defenses like butter - 'softened-butter' @ that miller - and 'right' bid not 'explosively' but hey man 202 pts. scored against the cards opposition certainly ranks up there say like as when compared to fulton city's 259 pt. total out-put and consideration against whom - a marshall co. win over mayfield definately would bring a smile to a few faces i'm sure, but hey nooooo way will there be any fans grinning from those other 3 teams mill - tank it to the bank guys, the deposit has been stamped & ledgered - congrats to that fierce purple flash machine once again - man they are some-thing aren't they kyle...

hey kyle keep your head up brother - no one looks forward to playing that tiny school called mayfield - i have 'all' the faith in the world victory will be yours @ least 'once' more in '07 when you & squad trip over to fulton - oh man you guys are playing county and not city right ???

Wow, Kent, not sure why the dislike for Calloway.
Fulton will be a win and probably Hopkins Co. (Jeff, better hit the mall for a red sports coat.... that makes 5) The other two games (Mayfield and Graves) are winnable but not as much as the two I named previously.

Also Kent, I haven't bought into the Flash yet, if they make some waves in the state tourny then I will admit how good they are...

hey i agree with you totally kyle with the lone oak purchase and the purple flash band-wagon - they've played & had a great season so far and of comparison to their history the 'best' - but they aren't going any-where so you don't even have to consider buying any-thing - if & when they meet a 'defensive unit' or @ least what i call a defensive unit, the glass slipper will not even go over their big toe - but you have to admit kyle that was one heck of a come-back by the oakers @ calloway a few weeks back and i realize a tough loss it was - plus i could care less what 'any' of the 'rankings' say either kyle - no 'waves' period coming from our 4a district i'm sorry to say but wise enough to know - history tells the story quite well along with the strength of scheduling being the rule of thumb - that's exactly the reason lone oak (being the smallest school in the state i think in the 4a class) jumped up this year to this district 4a class man - weak weak weak - but it's great to be a 'winner' for a change kyle, agreed - (uk thinks so also and is over-ranked but that's okay) -  my hat if off to all that play - one doesn't have to be a state or national champion in my book in order to have a great yearteam wise plus providing worthy & exciting entertainment for fans - amen, okay then amen...

GC,

I think Calloway can beat Graves, and Mayfield. Will they, who knows? There is no one of their schedule that they are not capable of beating.

Funny how you said that it will be close, but the "gc train" will "roll em over".

The cockyness that has come to be expected out of Graves/Mayfield area.
