Wow!!! Yes, that was three exclamation points. Fulton City beats Mayfield 36-19 for the first time in 45 years. Congrats to Coach Lohaus and the rest of the Bulldogs. Lohaus told me he was a freshman in high school back in 1962 the last time Fulton won this game. He said he didn't play a down, but enjoyed the show. I'm sure he thoroughly enjoyed the show tonight. I can't say enough about the entire Bulldog program. After struggling for so many years on the gridiron, tonight may just have made the struggle worth it. Again, congratulations!
As for Mayfield, it'll be interesting to see how the Cardinals handle things this week. This was the first time the've lost a regular season district game in a generation. Two weeks ago they were #1 in the state. Now they're coming off back-to-back losses at home. The schedule doesn't get any easier. With games at Marshall County and Caldwell County, it's not totally out of the realm of possibilities they could lose four in a row to end the regular season. It's time for the Cardinals to circle the wagons.
Other news and notes...
- I apologize again, Graves County fans. Technology hosed us again tonight. We'll have highlights on the web soon.
- Marshall County may be peaking at the right time. After that heartbreaking loss to Graves in week 3, they've ripped off 5 in a row...scoring almost 40 a night in the process. They may be catching Mayfield at a good time next week.
- Another big pat on the back to Calloway County. They've now won 3 in a row after that hard-fought 34-30 win over Hopkins Central. Last year they won 4 games. At the beginning on the season, I challenged them to win 5 games this year. I didn't think they'd do it so quickly. They're now 5-3, and I'll be wearing Coach McKeel's red blazer on the air next week. Considering he can fit me in his pocket, we may need to alter that thing a little bit.
- What in the world has happened to Caldwell County?!? They struggled as much as anybody the first two weeks of the year. Now they've won 6 in a row, and have won 208 in the last for weeks. They are on fire.
- What in the world has happened to Crittenden County?!? They struggled as much as anybody the first five weeks of the year. They were 0-5 and had been outscored 212-49. Now they've won four in a row and are threatening to finish the regular season at .500. You have to be proud of the Rockets for not quitting on Al Starnes and the Crittenden coaching staff.
- Greg tells me Lone Oak tried four onside kicks in the first half of their game with Muhlenberg North...a team that has lost 34 games in a row. I'm all for working on some things during an actual game...but c'mon. Really?!? Four?
- Lone Oak vs. Fulton City next week. I can not wait.
- Illinois playoff pairings come out Saturday. Greg will have all of those for you. Expect unbeaten Anna-Jonesboro and unbeaten Carterville to get #1 seeds. Massac County hopes they've done enough ay 7-2 to get a first round home game. I think they have.
That's all for now.
Feel free to chirp away.
