Week 10 Fallout...

First, a couple of wardrobe notes.  Thanks to everybody at Fulton City and Calloway County who helped out with my attire tonight.  I wore the Fulton t-shirt around the office all afternoon and everybody here seemed to get a kick out of it.  It was great meeting some of the Fulton boosters yesterday, and hopefully you enjoyed my "believing in the blue."

As for the Laker nation...that coat is magic!  And really, really hot.  I guess old-school polyester doesn't breathe that well.  I hope you guys got as a big a laugh as my co-workers did when they saw me walking the halls in that thing.  I'm more than happy to pay off my debt to you guys, and glad to see that Coach McKeel and the rest of the Lakers seem to have that program turned back around after a couple rough years.

Onto the football...

  • I don't know what I expected from Lone Oak and Fulton City, but the end result didn't surprise me.  I said earlier Fulton City couldn't afford to get behind against that Lone Oak offense.  28 quick points from the Flash and the game was all but over.  Lone Oak seemed to take some offense to the mid-week talk coming from the Fulton City camp and seemed to enjoy quieting the Bulldogs.  Assuming they can beat Heath next week, I can't wait to listen to a week's worth of trash-talk between Calloway and Lone Oak if they happen to meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
  • It's a shame Lone Oak couldn't have gotten Massac County on the schedule this year.  Those two offenses might have scored 120 points in a game.
  • Marshall County is absolutely clicking right now.  They're going to be a tough out in the playoffs...at least for the first two weeks.
  • Tonight was my first trip to the new stadium at Graves County.  It's a really nice complex and everybody who had anything to do with it should be really proud.
  • Mayfield could very well lose 4 straight heading into the playoffs.  When was the last time that ever happened?!?  Has it ever ever happened?!?
  • What in the world is going on at Trigg County?  After a 6-0 start, the Cats have been run out of the gym the last three weeks.  I'm totally perplexed.
  • Martin Westview is 9-0 for the first time since 1970...I think that was the last time that red coat was in style.  Next week's showdown with 8-1 Milan could very easily be our game of the week.
  • Congrats to Marion and DuQuoin for advancing in the Illinois playoffs Friday.  Everybody else goes Saturday.  I wouldn't be surprised if all of our local teams survive and advance.

That's all for now.  We'll see you Sunday night with our AP voting.

Let me preface my comment by saying that Lone Oak has a very good team, and by saying what I am about to say is taking nothing away from their performance tonight.  They played a good game and have an amazing quarterback.

What I would like to address is the officiating during tonights game.  I am not, by any means, saying that this is what cost us the game tonight becuase we lost the game by not playing to our best ability, but there were several times that I wondered if the officials were actually in the game.  On at least three occasions, the officials had no clue who had the ball and what direction the ball was going.

The one call that I still do not undestand is a penalty that we got for having too many men on the field.  Last I knew, you were allowed to have 11 men on the field...if this is still the case, how can we have too many when we only have 10?  Maybe the officials need to go back and have some more training before their next game!!!

Dawgs, keep your heads up and get ready for Reidland next week!!!!

I know that Lone Oak and Fulton City were both undefeated and for that reason probably won game of the week, but has anyone thought as to why these teams are udefeated?  Who do they play?  Lone Oak probably has the best player in this end of the state in Corey Robinson, but they haven't played a schedule fool of powerful teams.  I think that Lone oak is a pretty good team with a great coach and QB, but they are not the best team in Western Kentucky.  Taking schedules into consideration, I put my money on Marshall County as the Best this end of the state has to offer.I think a 7-2 record against quality opponents carries more weight than a 9-0 record agains a bunch of so/so's and nobodys.

Calvin, I agree that I would rank Marshall as the top team in far western Kentucky, as would be expected of a good 6A team compared to a good 4A team. But I wouldn't have a big problem with rating Lone Oak No. 2 among all classes. I guess you could make a case for Tilghman or Graves as well.

It's a shame Marshall and Lone Oak weren't scheduled this year. I know Marshall won handily last year, but Lone Oak is much better now and it would probably be a nice game.

Dawg Fan, yeah, I never heard of getting penalized for having too few on the field. Maybe they called something else, but that's what it looked like.

I've seen it on other blogs, so I'll bring it up here.  The hand shaking went on before the LO/FC game.  It was a good game. Both teams showed a lot of character.  Tempers flared, but were quickly extinguished.

To all the dawg fans complaining about the officiating........What about the 3 Unsportsmanlike conduct calls? Dont complain about the FAIR officiating until you can get your players under control. There was no reason to push Corey Robinson into the fence and yell at him after the play was over. And if you want bad officiating go to calloway.

Want to tip my hat to the Lone Oak team on their performance last night.  The aerial attack was impressive - not just the QB, but the O-line and receivers all executed their game plan very well in less than ideal conditions.

Didn't really understand the continued passing and onside-type kicks with a 5+ TD lead, but I guess the LO coaches had their reasons for calling those plays.

Truly, this is more embarassing than last week's trash talk over the Mayfield game.

Thank you very much Bidwell for deleting some of those comments. I think you should've deleted all of them, but that's just me.

Let me be the first to tip my hat to the Fulton City Bulldogs for being one of the most classless teams I have ever seen play.  You've proven even more classless than prior bulldog teams (which were actually known for losing (badly; even to Lone Oak) , yet even still talked trash). At least this year you have a good team to somewhat back it up.

Fulton City acted like the typical Fulton City team in this game.  They talked trash and played dirty all game long. As I stated before, Fulton has a great team this year. No team can go 7-0 and not have something to show for it. However, one area which appears to lack focus among the coaching staff is sportsmanship.

Having won 7 games in a row, and coming off a win against Mayfield, Fulton City had every right to be "riding high".   However, in no way were they prepared to lose, or, by any means, lose big.

Lone Oak led 35-6 going into the second half, leaving the bulldogs with a very improbable chance of mounting a secod half comback. This is when the play on the field tuned dirty.

In the third quarter Corey Robinson dropped back to pass, scrambled, and then "willingly" ran out of bounds. At said time a Fulton city player pushes him in the small of the back after Robinson is (at least) 2 steps of bounds. How was this kid not ejected? This was one of the most blatent cheepshots I have ever witnessed. After this play Fulton continued to run their mouths. Even the coaches got into the act, whenever late in the 3rd quarter down (down 42-6, I believe) one of the bulldog coaches was flagged for an unsportsman like conduct penalty for having not stopped argueing with, nor leaving the field, after numerous referee warnings.

If the coaches arent setting examples for how these kids should behave (especially during organized high school football) then who is. If your getting your butts handed to you by a better team, then suck it up, play your hardest (or your second string to get experience) , accept the loss, and learn for the next week.

Lone Oak Principle, Donna Wear, forecasting hot tempers between Fulton City and Lone Oak, arranged for a pre-game handshack (rather than a post-game handshake) between the two teams, as to avoid any confilict after the game. Excelent move by Mrs. Wear. Even after the game, as both teams parted to seperate endzones, one Fulton player continued to cross the field "taking trash", or shouting something at the LO team, until one of the Fulton coaches ran out there and pulled him away.

Real classy. Talking trash as you walk off the field having been beaten by the only other undefeated team this side of Louisville. You just got wooped 56-12, deal with it.

LO Alum - The LO boys came off the field saying that overall, the FC team was "pretty cool".  There is always trash talk and sometimes a cheap hit or 2. There was a lot of sportsmanship on the field; ie helping each other up, not hitting after the whistle.  Yes, Corey did take a major cheap shot, but after tempers flared, the culprit kicked out, and their coach's outburst, everything else went on as normal.  I believe I am echoing a previous post by Jacob.
Maybe the boys are just comparing this game to Muhlenburg North where the entire game was cheap shots, trash talk, and unmentionable grabbing of private parts.  Corey got kneed so bad in that game, he was doubled over.  Somehow, he got the unsportsmanlike penalty for reacting as any normal male would.
I credit the refs for keeping this game under control too for calling penalties on chop blocks.  Knowing that penalties will be called for gross infractions often limits the cheap stuff.
So, my point is this...if the boys that are playing didn't think that FC was classless, we shouldn't either. They considered the goings on as a normal football game.

I belive the LO/FC hand shake was pre-game rather than post game.  Well both teams agreed and it was caried out that way.  After the game i do belive that there were some chants of BS coming from the LO side.  Cheap shots were being delivered by both teams.  The last touchdown for FC the LO player threw the FC player clearly after the play.  There were taunts and trach talking by both teams all night too.  As far as the puching and shoving that happned on the sideline I thnk both teams handled it very well.  The FC coaching staff ran across the field and took control of their players.  The players on the FC sideline stayed in place and did not get involved.

And Coach Mike was trying to get the Refs to explain why a flag was thrown for having too many players on the field when only 10 were out there.  Like an eariler post said the refs were all over the place, not knowing which way the play was going.

FC did get beat and out played by a great team.  I am almost glad they got spanked like this.  Some of our players like posting on this site and others talking smack this will hopefuly bring them back to reality and get them ready for the playoffs.

Good game Flash good luck the next few weeks.

It was explained to us by a purple clad flash supporter that the before-the-game handshake was started earlier in the season because of opposing teams wanting to start a fight after the game was over.  Let's keep the facts straight.

LoveThoseDawgs--that's exactly what Alum 01 said.  Other teams, after being beaten badly had tried starting fights, so they moved it before the game.

If Fulton City was beaten badly(and they were) she was expecting the same thing, and moved the handshake to pre-game.

I do have to say that everyone is harping on the fact that the LO QB, who is an amazing player, was pushed after he was out of bounds, but nothing is mentioned of how our player was treated by the other LO players and coaches once he did this.  He was kicked and pushed by other LO players on the sidelines as well as the coaches.  How can you talk about the example FC coaches set when your coaches are pushing high school football players.  Our coaches were only protesting a TERRIBLE call by the offiicials when they flagged us for too many men on the field when we only had 10 men.  Last I checked this was a game played with 11 on each side.  Loan Oak is a great team, and I wish you luck over the next few weeks, but let's not overlook the fact that both teams were taking cheapshots and mouthing, not just Fulton City.

K.N,

I believe the reason for everyone putting the Dogs down is because the amount of trash talk from their fans, parents and players leading into this game.....

In this society, trash talk is not looked at favorably. If your a good team, act like you've been there before, if your a bad team, you have to no reason to trash talk.

The Bulldogs can trash talk, but they can't take it.

Hopefully everyone on here will give Lone Oak a modicum of credit for thier season now--they walloped a strong Fulton City squad.  I'm sure all the naysayers will now point out that Fulton City is a 1A school, but remember that doing so is unfair to the kids at FC.  They're a strong team regardless of classification, and they ran into a superior team last Friday.

I agree with everything Dawg Fan has said, both teams were talking trash and taking cheap shots, it is not right just putting it off on Fulton.  It was a big game, both teams were going in undefeated and someone had to get that loss on their record, of course there was going to be some trash talking. As for the coaches, Coach Mike might have gotten a disorderly conduct call, but at least it was just for disagreeing with the ref, were as Lone Oak's coaches physically kicked a player and said some not so nice words. Where were the refs on that call? In my opinion that is pretty "classless."
