The first week of playoffs is in the books in Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri. In my six years here at WPSD, I don't ever remember an opening round that had so many surprises.
- Two weeks ago, Caldwell County may have been the hottest team in the region. After an 0-2 start, they had won seven in a row and were rolling. But for the second straight week, the Tiger offense vanished. Heath walked into Princeton and came out with their first playoff win in forever (our records only go back to 1998.) As close as the 2A 1st district is, I didn't think Heath could win because I thought they were a little too beat up. How wrong I was! Despite playing with a shoulder injury pretty much all season long, Heath's Chad Wright carried the ball an amazing 47 times for 274 yards. I think that qualifies him as a workhorse. If the Pirates can control the clock with Wright again next week, there is no reason they can't go to Cadiz and beat Trigg County.
- Another team that lost its way in the last two weeks is Martin Westview. The Chargers were 9-0 last week and #2 in the state before losing to #5 Milan. Throw in Friday's 24-22 loss to Trenton Peabody and Westview is done. You start 9-0, then lose your last two by a combined eight points...and just like that it's time for basketball season. After their best start since 1970, I know the Chargers will spend a lot of the next 9 months wondering what went wrong.
- While their season is over, I'd like to applaud Coach Al Starnes and the Crittenden County Rockets. Never in a million years would I have thought they could have stayed within a field goal of Mayfield AT Mayfield in the playoffs. There may not have been a worse team in the state during the first month of the season than the Rockets. Thanks to a bunch of injuries and defections, the team was, frankly, a mess. But somehow the kids stuck with Coach Starnes and put together a great run to end the season. Hopefully they can build on that for next season.
- 39 years in the making. That's how long it's been since Fulton City not only hosted a playoff game, but WON a playoff game. They did both Friday night. The Bulldog faithful has seen quite a few lean years with their football program, and I know they're savoring their success during the past two years. Next week, they get another shot at Mayfield, but this time at home. Fulton already beat them once...for the first time in eons. The question now...can they do it again when it really matters.
- Lone Oak's Corey Robinson threw another 7 TDs Friday...and now has 74 for the year. He's four shy of the national single-season record. The thing about that Lone Oak offense that is so remarkable, is how the receivers just don't drop passes. Robinson is completing pretty much 3 out of every 4 passes...and while he's putting the ball on the numbers, the guys catch it every time. They make the game look awfully easy. It won't be easy for much longer.
- And now for the main event...Calloway County vs. Lone Oak. I've been waiting for this game for nearly two months. I'm sure I'm not alone. You take a little come-from-behind overtime win...sprinkle in a team's flag getting spiked into the opponent's field, and you've suddenly got a new, rather heated rivalry that is born. This one's got the chance to be good. We're planning to do our Friday 6pm sportscast live at Flash Field, and then for the first time ever we're going to leave the studio and do "Gridiron Glory" live at Lone Oak after the game. We hope everybody will come out before and after the game to show all the viewers at home why this has become one of the better rivalries in the region. Bring your signs...your body paint...whatever. We'd love to have a great scene at the game that we can show off on "Gridiron Glory."
- One quick note about the live game broadcast at WPSDTV.com. So far the feedback has been great about the Mayfield-Crittenden County game Friday. At this point, I would pencil in Calloway-Lone Oak for next Friday. Don't hold me to it, but I should have an official answer by Monday. Don't forget, we've got those live broadcasts archived on WPSDTV.com, and they will be there for quite some time. So go to the game, and then when you head home you can watch it again on your computer...whether it's next week or next year.
Congratulations to every team who moved on to the second round. For those teams who are done for the year, it's been our privilege to cover you this year. For you seniors, we wish you the best of luck in whatever your life holds. For you underclassmen, we'll see you next season...hopefully better than ever.
The floor is yours.
