Thank to the new six-class football playoff system in Kentucky, we're heading to the state quarterfinals with five teams from western Kentucky still alive in the playoffs. This year the Friday after Thanksgiving will be busier than ever.
I want to take a second and thank everybody who came out to be a part of our live broadcast at Lone Oak at 6pm last night. Some of you even spent some time making signs for the event. Sign of the night: "Bidwell, where's your Purple jacket?" Well played boys, well played. Other notes...
- Obviously, Corey Robinson and Lone Oak steal the headlines again with their impressive win over Calloway County. Robinson not only broke the national record with his 81st touchdown pass of the year, but he also broke the state record for yards in a season with 4,773. Unbelievable. Even when he doesn't put the throw on the money, his receivers always do a remarkable job of catching just about everything. They rarely drop a pass, and at the high school level, that's amazing. I don't think any one in their right mind can deny Lone Oak is really, really good. Starting Friday, the Flash will get the chance to start showing people if they can be great when North Bullitt comes to the newly-dubbed "Graveyard."
- Speaking of graveyards, that's about how quiet it was at Paducah Tilghman last night. Blue Tornado fans...where are you?!? I don't know if there were 500 fans at that game last night...and Union County even brought a good chunk of that number. Here's your open challenge for the week...come out and support your team this week as they try to get back to the state semifinals for the first time since 2003.
- For the first time in forever, Mayfield had to go on the road for a second-round playoff game. Senior quarterback Logan Armstrong wasn't going to let them lose to Fulton City again. His three rushing touchdowns helped the Cards avenge their earlier loss to Fulton. Now Mayfield has to go back on the road next week at Frankfort. It won't get easier for the Cardinals.
- It took a half for Trigg County to wake up against Heath before the Wildcats finally got past the Pirates. Trigg is back in the state quarterfinals for the second straight year. The good news for Trigg? They won't face Owensboro Catholic this week. The OC sent Trigg home the last FOUR years in the playoffs. This week, it's Metcalfe County coming to Perdue Field. Metcalfe is 10-2...both losses were on the road. That might be some good news for the Wildcats.
- What a comeback for Marshall County! Down 21-7 with 3 minutes left, they rally to beat Daviess County 22-21. Their reward? #1 St. X. Yikes!! It's safe to say this will be the Marshals biggest challenge of the year.
I hope everybody enjoys their turkey Thursday, and then get ready for a whole bunch of football Friday night. The floor, as always, is now yours.
