Reports of Thundersnow!

The winter storm that has developed over the region is fairly strong and will continue to impact the counties along and north/west of the Ohio River. In rare cases, storms like this can produce thundersnow! We have had several reports of this phenomenon in Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, and Paducah.

From the website www.theweatherprediction.com, here is a great excerpt on thundersnow and how it develops! Click here for an interesting read.

Icy roads are a major concern this afternoon and evening in the areas under a WINTER STORM WARNING. Travel is not advised, especially in Southern Illinois and SE Missouri. Be cautious and carry an winter weather emergency kit if you do have to commute these dangerous areas. Here is what to have with you....

Here in Metropolis, we had a couple claps of thunder around 1 pm....with sleet. Is there even an official meteorological name for that?  "thundersleet"....pretty awesome.
